Education To Me by Dymond - October 2022 Scholarship Essay
I grew up in a low-income neighborhood; gun violence, murder, and robbery cases all affected my childhood. From the age of five, I knew that I had to fight my way through the game of life. Growing up wasn’t easy… my mother was a single mom of four & constantly struggled with her finances. Although I was the youngest, my mother didn’t conceal her struggles from me. I often was overwhelmed and worried if my mother had enough money to pay her bills and take care of my siblings & I. In the third grade, I was labeled as “gifted”. I remember thinking “Wow, I actually have a chance to be something in life.” I never recognized how smart I was, until that day. From there on, I obsessed, some might say unhealthily, about going to college. Even though I didn’t know what I wanted to be, I knew I wanted to be something. When I got to middle school, I started taking high-school courses; I wanted a head start over my peers. During this time, I was discouraged and judged, the “smart cliques” didn't perceive me as intelligent; the way I talked and looked made me "stupid." However, I didn’t let this upset me for long.
I started taking dual enrollment classes through my communities local college in eighth grade and continued taking Honors, AP, and DE throughout high school. I take school very seriously, I will never let my grade drop below a C and in the long run, it helped me out. As a senior, I am currently in the top five percent of my class. I have already applied to 30 universities and colleges and have been accepted into 5! I have my whole life ahead of me and I’m ready to embark on my adventure. I will be starting college in the summer of 2023 and I’m exhilarated, even that is an understatement. I am ready to learn beyond high school and be knowledgeable on topics I wouldn’t be exposed to unless I was at college. Overall, education is my way out of the “ghetto”, education is my way out of poverty, and education is the threshold to a new beginning.
