Dinner with Barack Obama by Dylan - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

The President of the United States is the most respected position in the country, and countless skilled leaders have taken the position since George Washington first did in 1789. There have been many influential people who have taken the office of President who were some of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen, including John F. Kennedy, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, etc. However, the President I would most enjoy having dinner with would be former president Barack Obama. I would choose Barack Obama because he had the unique honor of being the nation's first African America president, meaning he had an experience in the White House that no one else had gone through before, and never will again.

Barack Obama was the first black president of the United States of America. Taking the racial issues that have plagued America since its founding into account, the strides that were taken from then until the election of Obama in 2008 show the development of the American people and the country as a whole. Obama was able to experience this first hand, and has a moment in history completely to himself, something no one else will ever be able to hold the title of as the first African American president. I would choose him to have dinner with because he would have the most unique story of any president to ever hold the title of President, only contested by George Washington as the first-ever president. Having dinner with Barack Obama would be an amazing honor, as I would love to hear about his time in office and how he believes him being the first black president affected the country, that is if he thinks it did at all. The election of a black president was an unprecedented moment in U.S. history, and shows how far we've come as a nation, and I would love to question him about where he thinks America is headed both socially and politically.

Obama's terms as the first African American president were times of great change in the history of the United States, and he is my choice to have dinner with because of that. His time as president marks a time in history where race was finally not the divisive issue it has had a history of being. His way of dealing with issues that the country faced was very intriguing to me, and picking his brain would be the best time of my life. It would be an honor to dine with any president, however I believe my time would be most well spent with Barack Obama.
