Metamorphosis: A Drive For Change by Dusti - June 2013 Scholarship Essay

Metamorphosis is a term most fifth graders can fully comprehend. When asked about this word, they’d probably tell you all about the magic that takes place when a caterpillar cocoons itself then later it breaks from its shell in an entirely different form.. beautiful, and mesmerizing. It was in fifth grade that I learned an entirely new definition to this word as my life changed completely. My dad became laid off which was not any cause for panic at first. He had been laid off before, but this time was different. I discovered what life was like living on the bare essentials. From that point forward I knew that I wanted to better my life. I wanted to escape the struggle I was living and build a better life for my children in the future. My dream became to graduate college and receive a degree in what I am passionate about. Once I graduate I’ll be the first in my family to receive a degree of any sort. Metamorphosis is what I was going through. I carry a weight on my shoulders that needs to be lifted. I'm pressured to not only better myself, but do what I can to better my future financially. I was changing my drive in life as my life was flipped upside down and my family came into a financial burden, but further more, I was changing into what you can compare to that of what a caterpillar goes through... I'm in my cocoon, pushing myself through school, and in the end, I hope to emerge as a butterfly. Beautiful, free, accomplished, educated, and finally the weight lifted off my shoulders. Attending college means a new life for my family, and a better future for myself.
