SOUL SEARCHING by Dragan - April 2013 Scholarship Essay
Since I’ve moved to the United States in 1991, I had a great range of different jobs that have not been very satisfying. At my last job I was doing research & development of new products which I enjoyed. I had twenty books laid out across my office book case that I filled completely with with my data because I like to be investigative, methodical and thorough. I love research and I love analyzing but it was not satisfying personally. So, I realized that if I wanted a job that is satisfying personally, may be I should be working with people. I thought about healthcare and started taking life science classes and volunteering at the Radiology department and found that I really loved sonography. I became fascinated by machinery, I loved the attention to details, technical skills and the importance of the position in a healthcare team. Also, I interviewed sonographers in several hospitals about their career which gave me a confirmation that I want to become sonographer. Aside from my personal determination and fortitude in immigrating to America and overcoming all of those obstacles, when I cared for people, people that have been sick in my life, I have been told that their illness would be much more difficult if I was not there for them. For example, my fiancé was diagnosed with a breast cancer. She said that I was the best caregiver that she ever had. At that time I realized that I have a skill that haven’t been utilized and that healthcare needs that. I’ve found that I am quite willing to help people in time of need and that I really felt for them and it was a joy to care for them when they were suffering.
