A World of Opportunities by Dora - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
The world is full of information, waiting to be grasped by those who take the opportunity. It contains a vast amount of knowledge that can influence people’s beliefs, actions and teach them how to empathize with others. Traveling to other countries can greatly benefit those who are able to immerse themselves into the new and allow them to become better students, leaders and people.
Traveling around the world is an eye opening experience that would benefit all college students. Studying abroad allows people to witness the struggles that others must overcome, how they go through life and appreciate all the things they have. For college students, this experience would be irreplaceable, permitting them to learn from people who have come from various backgrounds. They would be exposed to new beliefs, education styles and environments, teaching them how to adapt to and cope with new situations they have not experienced before. In most places, being from the United States they would be exposed to a much stricter lifestyle, harder classes and would also have the opportunity to learn a new language. As they endure the hardships presented by different countries they begin to recognize things they took advantage of or assumed everyone had. The young students would be forced to reflect on how they act and treat people, allowing them to make adjustments for the better as they try to blend into a new society. This reflection would help students appreciate all the things they have access to at home or in college, the people around them and the all the opportunities that are present in America.
Once they are able to fit into the new country, they would slowly begin to experience new ways of completing tasks or working towards goals. This opportunity would allow students to incorporate the things other countries do well into their own lifestyles, bringing back new ideas or information that could benefit both them and their peers. Learning different methods of communication or new leadership skills would not only give the students an advantage in school but also at work or in their future professions. It would give the students a unique prospective on situations, enhance their resumes and help shape them to become better people overall.
Requiring college students to study abroad is a great way to encourage diversity, promote different ideas and opinions, ultimately allowing the United States to evolve for the better as a whole. It would allow the United States to be full of intelligent citizens who are knowledgeable about life in various parts of the world, while possessing the keys to unlock undiscovered potential within the country.
