Let's Talk About Love by Donte - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

In college we learn some of the most daunting subjects from Kinesiology to Accounting. I completely understand that learning how the functions of your body work and knowing how to balance your income is important. Institutions seem to overlook the other core concepts sometimes though. It's a possibility that these concepts are overlooked because most people should acquire them before applying to a college course but in most scenarios that's not the case. After graduating with a Bachelor's, Master's or even a Doctorate's some people are still not equipped with the knowledge of love or common sense. Love just so happens to be one of the strongest and most used words on the planet. Life itself wouldn't exist without love, yet most courses graze the surface of the topic or avoid speaking about it at all.
Love isn't solely the connection that you have with your significant other. I'm an avid believer that love isn't just about hugs and kisses. Love is about the way you treat people, the planet and the effort you put into what you do (professionally). Love 101 would be the name of my course it would be offered all the way up to the Doctorate level. Life can feel incomplete if you don't have anyone/ anything to share your love with. Subconsciously love can be the force behind many important decisions. Perhaps you don't take the job because it's not something that you love or you love a certain brand but you have to cut ties from them because they practice strategies that devalue what you love.
As people we should be coached on love for as long as possible. Love is something that has to be groomed or nurtured from infancy until death. We often start off giving babies unconditional love then we seem to lose the urgency once they turn a certain age. Why is that? Nobody who is enrolled in a college (staff or student) can say that they don't love something, whether it be family, a pet, certain material items...the choice is yours.
Based on the accuracy of that statement we should start the conversation about love. Imagine a course that can teach you how to be a better version of you at the most grass root level. We must start from the heart (no pun intended). Instead of being graded on your intellect you would be graded upon your effort to exert love in whatever way you please. Colleges can help make the World a better place one course a time.
