Multiple choice is a common assessment format that individuals prefer to use because of its’ simplicity. This format is better known as “the luck of the draw”. It is referred as “the luck of the draw” because multiple choices redeem individuals from failing by carefully weighing the options. Multiple choices lift the ease of solving problems, but it does not create a platform where “reasoning” is challenged. However, a constructive response is an assessment format that beats the odd, and challenges individuals to become masterminds of tomorrow. According to Crescent Collegiate, “A constructive response is an open ended essay question that demonstrates cognitive knowledge and reasoning”. Constructive responses shouldn’t be seen as just a way of grading on a larger scale; it should be seen as a way to help expand your intellect.

The curriculum for testing in school has changed tremendously. Today, teachers have input constructive responses into quizzes because the different perspectives that are presented. When a topic is given, you are required to answer the question. However, there are many skills that enhance the validity of the answer. Some skills include imagination, common knowledge, real life experiences, and parables. My former English teacher, Mrs. Julia Foxworth, allowed us to read Hamlet. The quiz consisted of several constructive responses. I normally received almost all points in the constructive responses section because I applied real life applications to the questions in a specific manner that allowed her to see the points that I was trying to make.

Using constructive responses in a school setting lets me know that teachers are willing to help educate children, and allow them to reply in a matter that helps their understanding. Francis Bacon once said, “Knowledge is power”. It is important for individuals to be challenged to solve issues strategically. I prefer a constructive response because it is not a skill that is only used in school; it is a preparation tool for the real world. Real life challenges only can be solved through ideas that are broken down. Constructive responses are a stepping stone for the future. If you want to see changes or connections throughout the world, constructive response should be your ideal form of assessment.
