Attending College by Donald - June 2013 Scholarship Essay
I'm a 17 year-old high school senior, and simultaneously, a college freshman. I'm trying to get a head start on the 14 years of higher education required to achieve my goal – to become a neurosurgeon, specializing in brain surgery. In addition to high school and college classes, I'm in my fourth year of doctor shadowing in the Smith Northview Hospital Emergency Room and I've been accepted into the Pre-Med Program at ValdostaStateUniversity beginning August 2013.
My father died of cancer when I was nine years old and my single parent is struggling to pay for college costs. I don't have much time left over to work more than a few part-time hours a week. A scholarship would ensure that I can pay for classes, books and fees
A college education is the path to success, and a way to give back to the world. If I can get through 14 years of higher education, the possibilities are limitless. The knowledge gained could save a high school senior in a car wreck, a child in war-torn Syria or find a cure for cancer. I won’t have to worry about finding a job or being able to pay bills and support a family. Instead of “going to work,” I can enjoy every day in a field that’s evolving every minute of every day, and that continues to be absolutely fascinating. After four years in the emergency room, there’s no place I’d rather be, or anything else I’d rather do. A college education will allow me to realize my dream and contribute to future of the world, one patient at a time.
When I become a doctor, I will "pay it forward," providing a scholarship for some lucky student.
