Literature: A Study of Life by Don - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

As a high school senior, I understand and appreciate not only the importance of intellect and intelligence in today’s world, but also of spreading this knowledge so that others can appreciate and understand it as well. Therefore, if I were a teacher rather than a student, one primary subject exists to which I could passionately devote my all of my time and efforts for the sake of the well-being and intellectual development of the next generation of students and future adults of this world. Encouraging communication, perception, and comprehension which can be utilized in a number of ways, the subject that I would gladly teach remains to be the subject of literature.

I have always enjoyed writing and have recently gained a rather ardent interest in the proper attaining of knowledge and information from the subjects that books have to offer. From them, skills such as comprehension and perception can further be developed. To me, these skills are some of the most important which can be learned since they are the mediums through which real world information can be both gained and transmitted. By reading a book, rather than watching a show, movie, or video, it is required of your brain to search and work for the information that it receives rather than mindlessly absorbing pointless action. As well as this, books also display meaningful themes and are written with specific and important ideas in mind and must convey a particular message or require a more engaged reader to observe and analyze the writer’s style and usage with which they convey their point, further developing analytical skills and absorbing true life lessons at once.

Besides the necessity of reading, writing is an important skill for people to learn as it teaches communication of arguments and construction of ideas. The syntax of of writing, itself, enables the writer to develop a sense of fluidity and organization, both, necessary skills for success in life. Structure and development of ideas, important for independent thinking, as well as planning, which is an another absolute necessity for success, are all further developed as one begins, more and more, to write. Writing also allows for the spread and expressing of the author’s personal opinions and ideas, and I have always believed that multitude and variety, as well as diversity, of ideas is always the best approach at pushing for improvement. What one person may not observe, another may, and what he or she may not observe, the other may.

Over all, literature can be said to be the practice of language, in this case, the English language, and language is defined as the most efficient form of the communication of ideas. New ideas are best formulated with the expression and debate of various others; this is how progress is done. Therefore, it can be stated that the teaching of literature encourages progress as well as skills that serve as a necessity for life and success. Reading literature, as well as writing it, allow for the development of several skills such as, planning and organization, that are necessary for success and growth.
