Discovering and learning importance in resistance by Dominic - January 2022 Scholarship Essay
From 2021, and a little bit more into this year of 2022, I have learned something that I wish I knew and understood before. I’ve learned how to control and resist my thoughts and actions toward school and other activities like hanging with friends outside of school. For example, I’m ending this term with nearly a couple D’s and C’s because I kept pushing assignments forward saying, “I’ll get it done then”. But it never ends up done. This is the worst that I have ever done in my grades at school all my life. But I believe that this next term, I can end it with All A’s. To avoid this, I’ll use resistance and control. Here is how I learned the skill, what I’ll do with it, and how it has helped me still end term with a decent grade.
Last year, I had ended term 1 with my first C. So, from the start, I knew there was something wrong, but I just shrugged it off thinking I could squeeze by term 2. And here I am playing catch-up again, turning things in lastminute, getting behind on more recent assignments, the whole thing. But that is when I discovered resistance. I stopped hanging out and talking to friends outside of school more and paid more attention to homework and what needed to get done. Instead of waiting to turn in certain assignments, I would do them that day, so I didn’t have to worry about it when the due date came. I was able to finish all of my behind work, and still stay on top of present work.
I’m going to be learning how to drive soon, and I’m also going to try to apply for my first job. With the skill of control, I’ll make sure to stay on top of school and turn in assignments that were sent out that day instead of weeks later. I’ll also make sure that there’s not one day I go home without a to-do list to work on. I’ll set a time and make sure to work on school for at least 2 hours Monday through Friday.
It’s the begging of the final week of term. I’ve got 3 D’s, a couple C’s, barely A’s and a B. I finally learned my lesson, and I figured out how to control and resist. Saturday night, I made a to-do list for all of my classes. At first it was slow, but now I’m knocking nearly five assignments a day, as well as doing assignments that are due that week. I’m positive I’ll end term without a D, and I’ll make sure never again to let my grades fall. Thanks to the practice of resistance, I was able to stay focused o my work and still finish the term strong.
I have discovered a skill that I wish I found out before the year even began. I’m still glad to have learned it now, and I have plans for getting good grades for the last 2 terms. I’ve learned how to control the things I do, and how I go about them with school. However, the skill that I’ve discovered in 2021 and strengthened now in 2022 was the best and most important skill I learned not only for school, but for life as well.
