Let The Best of You Push You Forward by Diana - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

I will always remember the short story my professor taught on our last lecture, which goes as follows. Once there was a man who built houses for a living, but after years of working for his job he did not want to build another house and chose to retire. There was another man, whom asked him to build one more house. At first he refused, but he finally accepted. Even with his talent and skills he did not give much importance or care in building this house; the foundation was not firm, the doors were crooked, and the plaster was sloppy. When he called the owner to inform him that the house was done, he received a big surprise. The owner met up with him and told him “Here this is your house,” and handed him the keys. My professor surprised me with this lesson. I learned that you should always put more than 100 percent of your effort into your work because hard work will give you satisfying results, or you can end up with nothing.
The same day my anthropology professor, Dr. T.S Harvey inspired me when he showed us how his hard work in communication to help people in Guatemala understand the environmental consequences of Cyanobacteria Blooms could not only dangerously affect their lives and ecosystems, but could in fact become a problem for us all. The fact that my professor is an anthropologist and is involved in scientific research fascinates me because I never thought that anthropology could be used to solve certain issues that affect us worldwide.
If we give ourselves the chance to learn and explore we can surprise ourselves and become better individuals. Dr. T.S Harvey has taught me to be more demanding of my education because the most important reward of getting an education is learning and applying my attained knowledge to a problem. I was always told that college and anything you do is what you make out of it, and I live up to this because now more than ever I realize that life is too short to stop and contemplate on the things that go wrong. Instead of entangling ourselves in a bundle of emotions, we should stand tall and keep going. Thank you for your time and consideration.
