Education by Diana - June 2024 Scholarship Essay
I've found that informal education has played a significant role in my academic success. Informal education, which occurs outside of traditional classroom settings, has allowed me to explore subjects at my own pace and according to my interests, fostering a genuine love for learning that formal education sometimes struggles to inspire.
One way informal education has helped me is through access to online resources. Websites like Khan Academy, Coursera, and even educational YouTube channels have supplemented my school curriculum, providing explanations and insights that sometimes go beyond what is covered in class. This has been particularly useful in subjects like mathematics and science, where additional practice and different perspectives on problem-solving can make a huge difference in understanding complex concepts.
Participation in extracurricular activities has also been a crucial aspect of my informal education. Being part of a debate club, for example, has significantly improved my public speaking and critical thinking skills. These are abilities that directly translate into better performance in academic settings, particularly in classes that require presentations or critical analysis.
Moreover, informal education through reading books, both fiction and non-fiction, has expanded my vocabulary and improved my writing skills. By exploring a wide range of topics on my own, I have been able to connect different areas of knowledge, leading to a more comprehensive understanding of the subjects I study in school.
Engaging in discussions with peers and mentors outside of a classroom environment has also been incredibly beneficial. These conversations often provide new perspectives and insights, helping me to think more critically and creatively about various topics.
In essence, informal education has complemented my formal education by providing additional resources, practical experiences, and broader perspectives. This combination has not only enhanced my academic performance but also cultivated a lifelong passion for learning.
