Education to a Programmer by Dewong - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

Education is a very important part of our culture and even our biology. Education is what separates humans from animals. It allows mass amounts of knowledge to transfer from generation to generation, instead of each generation learning everything that the previous one did and trying to reach a little farther. The tower of knowledge is a world-wide effort to better humanity. Each generation adds their own floor to the tower, making it reach higher into the heavens and giving the next generation a head start to reach even farther. Education has shaped my life because it is what gave me the information I needed to pursue my dream career.

I have wanted to become a software designer since I was ten, after seeing my dad write programs for businesses and for his company, I wondered what was possible. The idea of talking to computers and making them do what I wanted to make fun games and useful applications was too awesome to ignore. I voraciously read every book I could find on the subject, educating myself on the basics and fundamentals of programming. Education allowed me to create a 100 level puzzle game with advanced methods using game creation software. Education is also enabling me to learn C, C++, JQuery, CSS, and HTML, all essential tools for web and software programs.

Education has also shaped my life in a scholastic sense since it is essential to go through school and earn my high school diploma. Without education I would not be on track to graduate next year or be able to attain high scores on the SAT Reasoning Test. My knowledge of Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Languages allows me to go out into the world and start businesses and companies to ease unemployment and stimulate the economy (I know this also through education). Education allows me to type this essay as I wouldn't know how to read, write, or even type without it.

As mentioned before, education has enabled me to design software, graduate college, and to even type this essay. In fact, everything humans do that wasn’t innate knowledge was taught to them, so in a sense education is responsible for nearly everything in our lives. Without it, our world and lives would be drastically different.
