Helping Others has Helped Me by Devin - May 2018 Scholarship Essay

This past year I have volunteered to help a family in my community with yard work and odd end jobs that need to be done around their home and farm. They came to me and asked how much it would cost for me to cut their grass while her husband was unable to since he was in the hospital with heart issues. I told them that I would do it for nothing but service hours for National Honor Society. She begged and pleaded to try and pay me for something but I steadfastly refused because I knew they could use the money more than I could. I agreed to come to their house and cut the grass, as well as helping out with things the wife is not able to do on her own in the afternoons on Sundays, and some times I go to help with things after school during the week when they need me.
My entire goal for helping these people is to make their lives as easy as it can. They are such a nice and sweet family they deserve to betaken care of. It was a big shock when the husband came down with these very serious heart issues and I felt very bad for them. I was very excited when they came to me asking for some help because I knew then that that was what I could do to make a difference in their lives. I do as much as I can physically do to take care of this amazing family and make these hard times they are going through a little more bearable.
The lessons I have learned from taking on this responsibility are innumerable. The lessons this teaches me help in day to day life as well as it will help me as I go onto college and beyond. This has taught me skills such as being reliable and punctual. They know that every Sunday I will be there without question as soon as I get off of work. Some more attributes that this helps build are being able to take pride in your work as well as doing things the right way without the expectation of reward or payment. When I leave their house I want to be able to say I did everything I could to the best of my ability while I was there. This type of mindset that this is allowing me to build will be very desirable by future employers after I get my degree.
I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to do my part in helping these people. It has and is continuing to make me a better person. I can not stress enough as to the great deal of pride I take in having the privilege to be apart of something like this. I would hope everyone could find an avenue to help someone out in the same way as this because it has been worth every minute of it.
