There are three types of people: the leader, the follower, or a combination of both (like most people). Yes, the leader is the ideal individual; however, it takes a great follower to become a great leader. Leadership skills are typically developed over a period of time following the wrong or the right people, breaking out of their trends and finding who you are as an individual. The college setting is the perfect venue for developing quality leadership skills. However, possessing leadership characteristics is not mandatory to be a success in college or even in life.

College, in general, usually demands intelligent and precise decision making to ensure success. However, in some cases, the decisions that some individuals make are strongly influenced by others which can have either positive or negative outcomes. If you choose your group of friends or acquaintances wisely, following them will not set you up for failure in college. Actually, following the right people in college can give an individual many different and good avenues to follow. Some people can follow others in college and be successful just like individuals with more leadership qualities.

Leading is an exceptional quality to possess, but it is not necessary to achieve success on the college level. Actually success, in some cases, can be measured by who you followed in college and how they impacted your life. Having leadership skills is a plus (only if the leading is with good intent) for college students but does not always decide the level of success one will achieve.
