A Harsh Life Lesson by Destiny - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

The most interesting lesson I learned in class came from Ms. Hennessey, the harshest and most terrifying teacher on campus. Ms. Hennessey’s history class was notorious for its rigor, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The class was the greatest challenge of my high school career. The homework load was massive, the tests perplexing, and the classroom environment tense. The slightest misstep – turning in late homework or answering a question incorrectly – could ignite her wrath.
I enjoyed the class, simply because I loved history, but I also dreaded it. I couldn’t understand why she didn’t try harder to “make learning fun” like other teachers did. Then one day, after the entire class groaned about the homework load, she said in frustration, “You think high school’s hard, wait until you get to college. And if you think college is hard, wait until you get to life.” That small lesson stuck with me. I finally understood why her class was so hard. She was trying to teach us a lesson that couldn’t be found in the text books, a lesson about life. Now whenever I encounter a challenge in college, I see it as preparation for future challenges.
