The Teacher that Believes in Others by Destiny - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

The things they don’t teach in school are: how to do taxes, how to apply for a job and ace an interview, how to take out a loan, how to budget for your individual use, and that we can always follow our dreams.
I am a high school senior, starting to think about which college I want to go into and what I should do with my life. Then, thinking about how I’m going to pay for college started giving me anxiety. So, if I were a teacher, I would strive to teach all children about the things that may stress us the most.
I’ve never had a job, basically because I don’t know how to get one. I will eventually figure it out though. I ever quite understood why they never taught simple skills like this in school.
I think about going to college, in order to become a well-rounded individual and can become a wedding planner. Everyone: my, friends, family, and even teachers ask me why I would want to do this for a living. Yes, I know it’s long hours, and yes, I know I can be paid more if I become a doctor, but this path WILL make me happy. No one likes this idea. They say I’m too smart no to become a doctor or lawyer. So, I want to teach others that they can do anything that makes them happy, and not to listen to societal pressures.
Sure, money and taxes may pressure us, and that is what I would want to get my students through, the tough financial times. In my mind, if I am happy with my work, then money isn’t an object. Everyone deserves to have a teacher that pushes them to do the things that will put a smile on their face.
Everyone is different, and everyone has different dreams. At an early age, my mother had told me that I want to be a dentist. So, until now, I thought I wanted to be a dentist. I don’t, I think teeth and tongues are gross! Yet, I was being brainwashed to believe that’s what I wanted to do with my life. If I had to sit in a dental office every day, scraping the plaque off of everyone’s teeth, I would be miserable. Absolutely miserable, and I believe that someone should teach us to be happy.
Many teens my age have anxiety and depression, and I believe somewhat of the cause is that we cannot make our own decisions. We wouldn’t know how to get our dream job, or even if our parents would allow us to have it. This creates stress in the mind, and I want to teach others how to relieve that stress. That I could help them prepare for job interviews and do their taxes with them as long as they are happy with their decisions.
In essence, live however you believe you should live life to the fullest, and always remember that the only permanent things in life is life and death. Everything else can be changed, so make yourself happy.
