Life Skills to Survive and Thrive by Destiny - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

From kindergarten to senior year students attend a school where they learn about numerous subjects that would eventually spark their interest so that they might continue their education on a college level and aspire to resemble the people they once studied in grade school, but sometimes those lessons seem to be completely counterproductive to life after high school. Those subjects are the reason why if the roles were reversed I would teach a life skills course.
My course would teach high school students all the fundamental things about adult life so that they would be prepared for the inevitable and swiftly approaching future. Some students may have parents to instill in them how to survive and thrive in the adult world, but what about the rest of us? The overwhelming majority of students impending their graduation year, including myself, have little to no perception of life as an adult. This automatically sets us back for the upcoming years because we are not being educated on how to handle certain situations properly. This life skills course would cover subjects, such as how to pay a bill, cash a check, and file taxes. It would also include material that would instill in the students money and time management.
As simple as some of these tasks may seem, students from my generation,including myself, have not been taught these fundamental lessons and if the roles were switched I would do everything in my power to make sure that no student went on in life without the tools to survive and thrive.
