Overcoming Academic Obstacles by Destined - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
Life as a whole entity has always been a major obstacle. Trying to get extra studying time in academics was always a struggle. Whether my family was in an argument, in need of a cooked dinner, assistance in homework, it was always my job to fly to the rescue. Which made it rather difficult to study or finish projects. The only way to keep focused on my goals without getting off track was to simply stay focused. As simple as it may sound, that always deemed the desired results. There has been many instances where I could have given up on academics. One being my overconsumption of alcohol, the status of my mother, or even the situation of my family. I had to look at the situation as a reason to soar higher. I couldn’t allow the situation to shape my mindset, I knew I had to rise above these obstacles.
Going through all those life hindrances taught me one important lesson that I will never forget. Why try to change the inevitable, when you could only change your reaction. Being a college freshman at this point, I always have to remember where I came from and how much I could withstand. I went from being a homeless, alcoholic, depressed and greatly angered child to a young man who graduated high school with a 3.38 GPA. Who now currently attends an amazing private university.
