The Impact of Informal Education on My Pursuit of Environmental Health and Safety Excellence by Desmond - June 2024 Scholarship Essay
Informal education has played a pivotal role in my academic success, particularly in my pursuit of studies in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at Central Michigan University (CMU). My journey, marked by both structured learning and experiential education, has been profoundly shaped by the knowledge and skills I gained outside the traditional classroom setting.
My current role as a Health and Safety Officer with the Dubai Civil Defense/Emirates Safety Laboratory has provided me with extensive informal education opportunities. Here, I am involved in day-to-day safety operations, developing risk assessments, and creating emergency response plans. As the Emergency Response Team Leader, I have learned critical skills in leadership, crisis management, and safety protocol implementation. These practical experiences have not only reinforced my formal education but also enriched my understanding of real-world safety challenges and solutions.
Growing up in a rural community in Nigeria, my early education was supplemented by life experiences and community teachings. In an environment with limited resources, learning often occurred through observation, community interaction, and practical problem-solving. My upbringing instilled in me a strong appreciation for the value of education and its potential to effect positive change. Witnessing the challenges faced by my community, such as the lack of basic safety measures, inspired me to pursue a career in EHS, aiming to address these issues at a fundamental level.
One of the most significant informal learning experiences that shaped my academic path was the Rivers State petrol tanker explosion on April 26, 2024. This tragic incident, which claimed over 150 lives, including pregnant women and children, underscored the urgent need for robust safety practices. The event was a stark reminder of the consequences of inadequate safety regulations and the importance of preventive measures. This experience motivated me to deepen my understanding of safety management and fueled my passion for enhancing safety standards in Nigeria and beyond.
In addition to my formal qualifications, including the Level 3 NEBOSH IGC and a Level 7 diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from the Qualifi European Safety Council UK, my informal education has been instrumental in my professional growth. The practical knowledge gained through hands-on experience and community involvement has equipped me with a unique perspective on safety management. It has taught me to approach problems holistically, considering both theoretical knowledge and practical realities.
My informal education has also been driven by a continuous commitment to self-improvement and lifelong learning. Engaging with professional networks, attending workshops, and participating in industry seminars have all contributed to my knowledge base. These activities have allowed me to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field, adapt to emerging challenges, and continuously refine my skills.
As I aspire to pursue my studies at CMU, I am confident that my background in informal education will greatly enhance my academic experience. CMU's strong reputation in EHS, particularly within the esteemed Department of Risk Management and Environmental Health and Safety Management, aligns perfectly with my career goals. I am eager to integrate my practical knowledge with the advanced academic training offered at CMU, ultimately enabling me to develop comprehensive safety measures and policies.
My goal is to use the education I receive at CMU to advocate for and implement effective safety regulations in Nigeria. By creating safety awareness and improving safety practices, I aim to prevent tragedies like the Rivers State petrol tanker explosion. Informal education has not only been a cornerstone of my academic success but also a driving force behind my commitment to making a meaningful impact in my community and beyond.
