Dinner With Abigail Adams by Desiree - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

If I could have dinner with any historical figure I would choose Abigail Adams. As most people know she was the first lady during her husband's, John Adams, presidency. During this time she used the position to her advantage; she wrote letters to John and congress urging them to give women more power. She was also greatly opposed to slavery and wrote letters to her husband about that also. I feel that having dinner with Abigail Adams would be both an informative and interesting experience.
Abigail Adams believed that women should be more than just their husbands wives. She believed that women have the right to own property and be educated. She wrote her to husband and congress requesting them to "Remember the ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors." I would like to ask Abigail about her struggles of being a women's advocate during a time when women had very little rights.
Abigail also believed that slavery was evil; that it was a threat to the democratic system. When she sent a black servant boy to an evening school she was met with some resistance from her neighbor. If I could have dinner with Abigail I would ask her her opinion on today's black oppression and how she would go about handling the situation.
There are many other questions I would ask Abigail Adams, most of them pertaining to current issues, these were just two examples. She was not only an advocate for women's rights but a pioneer. I admire her greatly for her courage to speak out on things that many disagreed with during her time.
