Resilience by Desiree - January 2022 Scholarship Essay
Resilience; the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. Or often referred to as the ability to bounce back. I lived in a 2 parent household, middle class income, and a close knit or at least attempted close knit family. My parents might not have been high class but having the relationship I had with them played an essential part in my upbringing. Additionally, it greatly affected the outside of my home life. I oftentimes tended to have more morals and common sense than some of my peers did. I came out of situations better than most of my peers did, due to knowledge I had acquired from my parents.
Imagine the lives of children that can be saved if we made it our responsibility to protect and make sure our children are in healthy homes. If we used our past as inspiration to help others. This is why my goal to be a lawyer for family and children's services is a necessity rather than a want. I want to be the start of making change.
In making this dream of mine possible, there are multiple challenges that will be thrown at me. In my life there were several obstacles that I have faced that I had to overcome. For example, the obstacle that was the strongest and most recent; Covid-19. In April 2021, I was told I was positive for the Covid-19 virus. It affected me and my household in multiple ways. It hindered me from taking my SAT test with my school , I fell behind in my classwork, and mentally isolated me from my friends, family, and job.
Aside from all the physical aspects of life it affected, it feared me of never recovering from my health and being normal again. However, covid-19 made me stronger in the end. It increased my resilience and strengthened my dedication to my education. Furthermore, it strengthened my mind. Resilience is significant when it comes to the difficult times in life. It makes the impossible possible!
My professional goal in life is to be a family lawyer or social worker. I wish to help at-risk children who were not as fortunate obtain a fruitful life and gain a healthy family. I plan to conquer these goals by getting my undergraduate degree and, soon after, applying for law school and passing the bar exam. My dream is to have my own law firm one day or own a social work practice for helping children in need.
In the end, my goal is to help as many children as possible. As I help unite and build families, I plan to keep my home healthy as well and potentially raise a family of my own. Even when the process seems impossible, I plan to overcome every barrier and use my resilience to get back on track and reach my goals. It begins with one home. One family. One case. And all change can start with one person! I am that one person!
