If I Were A Professor by Deshay - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I was a professor, I would want to teach a class about how to handle life as an adult for students. I would teach this class to give students what I missed out on while going to school, which was someone to tell me how to stay afloat. Not every class is required to graduate but my class would be because this would give students advice on how to live in the real world. For example, how to do your own taxes and how to find the perfect home for your budget. Helping other students is very important to me because they could be potential business leaders ready to take on the world.
It’s so hard to become independent in two months, and more students struggle with that than the actual school work. Waking up early for classes, eating food at your own times, and taking care of your own financial needs are prime examples. Students don’t learn this stuff in high school and most colleges don’t have a class to help teach important information needed to properly “adult”. A good way to be financially smart is to save a certain amount of money every week to build a savings account. Starting simple like five dollars every week or every paycheck can help students in the long run when they need rainy day money. One thing I learned how to do is invest in my future. Saving money to open my own business, get my own house, or get a new car, are just ways that I motivate myself to be financially smart.
Another reason I would like to teach this class is to make sure students know how to interact with people in a professional environment. Even though colleges offer speech classes, they don’t teach you how to strike up a conversation with potential business partners or how to ask your boss for a raise without being rude. I would teach students to how to handle life situations that can occur in the corporate world. Having these lessons can help while students who are looking for internships and jobs before college is over.
