Leadership Skills by Deryk - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Although leadership skills are a very personal attribute, everyone possesses some. We can all find times in our lives when others notice what we are doing. It is at a moment when we notice someone watching that we determine what type of choice we are going to make, and therefore, what type of leader we are. College students are presented with a multitude of new opportunities. These opportunities allow us to be leaders in our education. Success in college will be a choice we make in choosing to go to class, learn at a high level, and use our skills and knowledge to promote learning and community, as well as service to others.

Some leaders are vocal leaders, some lead by actions. I am the type of person who believes that my actions are a direct reflection of who I am. I am human and will always make mistakes, but I am a person who wants to do the right things. I want to go to college and learn at a high level. I want others to know that about me. I am not going to tell people what they should do, but want to be a person who shows them the right thing to do, just by doing it. I believe this is how I will find success in college and in life.

I believe that people with any leadership skills can be successful. The real question, I believe, is about the choices people make. Inherently people want to succeed. Choosing to do things like attending class and wanting to learn at a high level are fundamental to success in college. Walking with a friend to class and studying with a friend are two easy ways to lead yourself and your friend to success.
