My purpose by Dennis - April 2022 Scholarship Essay
Growing up, every time I had taken tests or surveys to determine my future occupation, I had always gotten jobs that involved helping people and taking care of them, especially in the medical field. Nursing was always the very first pick.
A year ago, I was lifeguarding at a pool I worked at when I saw this little boy drowning. So, I sprung into action and got him out of the swimming pool; when I got him out, I started asking him questions to see if he was with me, but I didn't get any response. I noticed he was unconscious, so I checked his pulse, and I came to find out he did have one. I go through the standard procedures by getting someone to call 911 and start giving him mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions. The little boy's mother was so scared for her son's life. After about a minute of CPR, the boy coughed up some water and woke up, taking an enormous gasp of air I've never seen someone take. A couple of minutes later, the EMTs arrived, and the boy turned out to be perfectly fine. The feeling I got was almost unexplainable. When all the adrenaline left my body, I was shocked, and I said to myself, "Did I just do that?".
I remember everyone treated me like some hero, but to me, it felt like I was just doing something right in my life. That's when I realized; I wanted to become a nurse.
