Power by Denise - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
Have you ever heard that knowledge is power? It is commonly misconstrued that having an education automatically makes you smart or gives you the power to be able to do anything just because you have a degree. College doesn’t and will never make anyone better than anyone else. You can earn some of the same positions without having a degree, of course, nothing too outrageous like an M.D.
The truth is, college is important but it’s not for everyone, I believe that the values and qualities each person has are different and that sometimes things like college are harder. There is absolutely nothing wrong with trade school or going right into working, if other people didn’t do it then nobody would, we should be grateful for the people that perform those jobs. College provides hundreds of opportunities for students looking for careers, it's a place where you not only learn about math, science, and English but you learn about yourself, receiving an education past high school is the traditional route most people take but I think it is over-glorified in today's society.
College is very important to me, it’s going to allow me to receive my bachelor's degree in human biology and later become a doctor but it’s also extremely expensive, with the average cost of tuition being $26,290 the regular American student is dealt with having to take out astronomical loans. Not everyone can afford college, including me and that is the main problem, setting it at such a great price and saying knowledge is power isn’t fair and it shouldn’t be frowned upon for others to want different things in their life just because that’s the path many individuals follow.
In closing, yes, I do believe that a college education is important, it opens doors and builds useful connections amongst those that are following a similar path within their careers, although it can be pricey I do think that it is worth the result and ultimately everyone should get a fair chance to be able to pursue it at an equal opportunity.
