My Role as a MathTeacher by Demoya - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles in school were reversed I would choose to be a math teacher. This is because I personally do not like math and it is hard for me to understand. This is the situation for many students who are in school. I would like to be a math teacher because math is boring. In my class lessons would be interactive and make the children want to study math and care about their grades.
Most teachers are there just to receive a pay check. This is not the person I want to be. I would be a teacher that actually cared about the personal lives of their student and did not sugar coat the real world. I want to be a person people can come to and talk to in the safety of my classroom.
I want my classroom to be a safe space where people know they will be accepted and not persecuted for who they are. Teachers say their room is a safe space when in reality if you disagree with them you will be persecuted. I want my room to be truly safe. I will scold people when they make others feel like they are nothing. This will allow the victim to understand there is someone who is in their corner and will go to bat for them. I will be the teacher that helps people understand they matter. By teaching math I will be able to achieve these goals and help people understand the importance of education and taking care of themselves.
