Changing Courses by Demetrius - September 2017 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my studies at Utah State University, I have taken a number of electives. These subjects ranged from dancing Big Band Swing to studying the Big Bang. Out of all my elective courses, the Huntsman Marketing Association directed the remainder of my education. First, I sprung into this course from my initial interest in an introductory marketing course, but then, as my skilled developed, my intent matured to the point that I have now changed my major and am excited for the future.
Marketing was originally one of the business generals I had to take in my accounting major. I soon found, however, that marketing required research and presentation, skills I wanted to improve in. I enjoyed this beginning course, and when I heard about the more project committed Hunts Marketing Association course, I was ready for more.
Rather than going over the basic principles of marketing, this course applied those lessons to help companies in building marketing strategies. We surprisingly did this as groups, which unexpectedly grew my lacking skills in trust and cooperation. My abilities to conduct effective research and and present publicly also flourished. When my group successful identified a solution for a local company at the end of the year, and presented that solution effectively, they choose us and we won the end of year competition.
These experiences helped me realize that for the first time in all my studies there was something that made me excited in school. With that in mind, I decided to change my major this semester.
Changing my major to marketing so late into my education was an exhaustive process. My registration for classes was delayed, many of my previously added classes had to be dropped, and professors had to be contacted to add marketing courses. During the upheaval, I had the chance to meet with one of my new professors and discuss the brand research and the group projects we’ll be performing this year. I am ecstatic.
For the first time in my education I am excited for my future because of what I have learned and how I have grown, thanks to an elective, and changing courses.
