Taking Control of My Future by Delena - August 2023 Scholarship Essay

As I opened my laptop, I just felt so overwhelmed with all of the assignments that I had to complete. Most of the time I didn’t know where to start. Should I do the assignment that will take me longer but is due sooner or start with one that won’t take me as long, so I don’t have to worry about it anymore. I would feel stressed out because I thought that I wouldn’t get everything done on time. I knew that I just had to believe in myself and what I could accomplish. When I was younger, there were times when I felt like I couldn’t do something and because of that, I wouldn’t try as hard. Then, things took a turn for the better. I surrounded myself around like-minded people and that gave me the courage to leave my fear of not being able to do something behind. This allowed me to stand up for what I believe in and always try my hardest in every task that I need to complete.
I knew then that something had to change. I couldn't jump from one assignment to another like a game of hopscotch. Although I was able to get all of the work done on time, I decided to find another, more effective method. I created a to-do list and wrote down the things that I had to get done in order from highly important to least important. As I completed a task, I would check it off. This allowed me to alleviate the stress of feeling like I couldn’t get everything done. I remember feeling so accomplished once I would get something done and check it off of my to-do list. I found it very beneficial that my computer already came with a journal app. I found it more feasible to use the journal app as most of my assignments were on the computer anyway. I cleared and reset my to-do list every week. The assignments that were considered long term had a special slot on the list. I also color-coded the assignments by class which ensured that I remained organized.
Now I am able to manage my time a lot better now. All of my assignments get done and I am not as stressed out as I was before. I also have more time for my hobbies such as reading books and playing my piano. This also allowed me to believe in myself more because I was getting things done more efficiently. As a result, I spent less time worrying about when I was going to complete the next assignment and more time actually doing the assignment.
This achievement will support my future goals because my workload may increase and become more arduous. I hope to become an anesthesiologist one day and I am cognizant of what it takes to get there. Medical school will take a lot of hard work and persistence which are characteristics that I have developed. Additionally, it is imperative that I know how to manage my time to make sure that I complete everything that is required of me. I don’t want to be overwhelmed by the amount of work that I have to get done. I also want to have time to play songs on my piano as it brings me a colossal amount of tranquility. I want to have enough free time so that I can do the things that are important to me.
