Pioneering in the end Arithmophobia by Delailah - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were a teacher, I would without a doubt teach mathematics. Spite the stigmatism associated with it, the beauty of math is underrated. Principles used in past classes, were used to solve these complex equations. The quadratic parabola that needs x to equal the limit, is simplified by using properties in Algebra. Unlike subjects like english and art, math uses logical steps to simplify/solve said problem. There is no skipping steps, or straying off the ‘path’ to the correct answer (unless the wrong numbers are used). There is limited methods to reach your correct conclusion; much like in life. Sometimes these steps are lengthy and may take up time, and that is where most give up, the ability to reach the end is the rush that fuels me.
The beauty in reaching the end, is acknowledging that all the numbers fell into the right place. For one wrong parenthesis, exponent, or something as simple as the wrong decimal, could throw the whole equation off. One integer could mean the difference between no limit or infinite possibilities of limits.
That is what I would teach my students. To appreciate mathematics and how to tackle the equations logically and through simplified terms. Sharing my passion with students is what I would be doing and hopefully inspiring them to pursue what they are admire and find beauty in.
