A Classroom built for success by DeLacy - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
My passion to help people both domestic and abroad has been the driving force behind my education goals, and has motivated my desire to explore many different classroom settings.
Because of the fact I feel so deeply about helping people from all corners of the world, in a humanitarian fashion, I envision an ideal classroom environment consisting of classmates from many different countries, of different religions and backgrounds accompanying me in the class. I think this could potentially create very worthwhile conversations that pertain to my global studies major, and give myself and the other classmates valuable insight into different cultures through open dialogue among fellow peers.
I also enjoy hands on learning, and I think that dedicating some time in the classroom to making something traditional from the culture we are learning about would help make the class connect to each individual on a more personal level. This is something I recall a teacher I had when I was in second grade doing. She was Ukrainian, and she taught us how to make a traditional Easter bread. I am 29 now, and that lesson has stuck with me for over 22 years.
To me, feeling a connection and genuine interest in the information I've learned in a class is a big indication that the classroom environment has helped move me in the direction of success.
