Explain how your chosen major benefits society by DeJuanna - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
Saying that Physics has a major benefit to society, is a broad statement. So, how am I to answer a question that has so much complexity. To answer it broadly, would not only dilute the question, but my contribution. If you haven’t realized and I kept you waiting, my major is Physics. To answer the way I will use my major to benefit the society is even broad and would have more words to this essay than required. So, with the time I have during finals week, and your attention while reading. I intend to explain two benefits. (Anyone with english under their belt, I’m sorry, I know saying, “I will tell you”, is a big no no. But, according to “Writing about Writing”, some believe there are no rules.) The first contribution is becoming a professor of theoretical physics, where we can see all the options one can take. To allow the new generation to see that the world is full of possibilities. Even though there is a big world, there is one more person to help them understand where they stand. The work that I would like to contribute before doing so is the attempt at infinity. With my experience either way, I can give my own experience to the way we should live our lives. Full of passion, curiosity, and imagination. If I don’t find something, I tried, this shows that going for what you want doesn’t make life less honorable. If I succeed, this is an example of what it looks like to believe in yourself. As generations duplicate, mental health is one that depletes. Even though it is something that is talked about the most. Suicide rates, diagnoses, and depression are at high rates, one reason being because of the work force. This has been more of a relevant topic after Covid. How can we prevent, or predict, what will happen when we don’t have information on something like Covid. So, instead Id like to instill the confidence to follow the impossibilities. Similarly to my other benefit, this one is something I am very excited to do. We hear a lot about how we contribute to the world, and how we can make a difference. The difference not only starts with us, but evolution. In order to do so, we have to think about the generations to come, and what we will leave behind. I believe, because of my major, I will meet many people, and hopefully a lot of money, as most of us wish. But, what to do with that money is the important part. With those two things, I’d like to change the residential institution.
We hear about those who give money to children, so they are able to go to college. Or giving money in order to feed and upgrade an orphanage. I think there are flaws in those actions. Instead, I have an idea in the efforts I can make. What I will do is create families, homes. What I would like to do is create their own school with the individual house. Not only are they fed, clothed, and taken care of, but they get their own schooling as a whole. I have always wanted a big family, more than ten children. Unfortunately, with my work I know that my attention would be where it would be, as you can imagine. So, I thought “What if I adopted a house?” What If I had children where they are taken care of as if it was like the movie, Cheaper by the Dozen. I imagine, happy children running around with no worries. No worries of whether they will be chosen, or if they have to move again. Instead, they already have a home and an education. This is where we solve the job problem. Teachers are paid a low salary, as you can guess, and for this project I’d like to hire a whole system. Simply for that individual house. Of course, there are multiple orphanages, but I’m prepared to do this to multiple. As if they were those nice boarding schools. These children deserve to have guidance, to go to college, and to contribute to the world too. To believe they are not an option, but that they have options.
That’s where my job comes in, clients, funding, and non-profits. I know that I’m meant to do something, ever since my siblings where adopted. If my family didn’t take them in, they would have been in the system. My uncle had told me about the system, when he used to work within it. There are problems within this individual system, but we can do something about it. There is not the possibility of it not working, if I thought of it, someone else could have also. If two people care about the system, then more do too. There are more people who want to change the world, and benefit to society. I believe my major will benefit people, and their belief to create possibilities, and options. To change the world.
