Why I believe I'm more proactive at night by Declan - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

When one thinks of what it means to be a "morning person", they usually envision waking at the early hours of the day. They imagine scenes of energetic pro-activity and a head start to the day. These scenarios don't apply to me because I prefer to stay up late and sleep in late the next day. I'd be more inclined to call myself a night owl because I enjoy going out at night.

Anyone can go downtown and explore their surroundings with their closest friends during the broad daylight, but once the sun sets, there's something that makes the act almost rebellious. The temperature starts to drop, and my awareness increases. I begin to see how my surroundings have morphed into a strange new world. Sights that I've seen my whole life look entirely different and fill me with a sense of wonder.

Night life seems to be calling out to me because I'm attracted to the sort of thrill that it provides. I don't know if it stems from the inherent childhood fear of the dark, or the instinctive mindset to protect oneself from the outside world once the sun sets. Whatever it is, I keep coming back to it and it restores my energy.
