Its Not About Me by Debria - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
Going to Wednesday night bible class was a regular for my family, as deciated members of HWY 231 Church of Christ . I enjoyed bible class , a lot but nothing really touched my soul deeply , plus with me being a teenagers and thinking the bible cannot relates to the times of today.
As I am sitting in the teen girls bible class, I hear the whispers of the girls talking about what happened at school , the sounds of kids laughing and crying as they separate from their parents started to fade as class began to start.
The Keeping It Real crew, which is us teen girls, ready to embark on another Jantrice Smothernman Wednesday night lesson. She stands at about 5'7 and her dreaded hair sways with the rhythm of voice. Mrs.Jantrice is the most passionate teacher you will ever meet, and she's not afraid to use her students as props in her dramatic interpretations of bible stories and converting it to real life so we can relate. Though she wasn't that much older than us ,she was so wise.
She was teaching a lesson titled "It Not About me" , she passed a mirror around to each of the girls and she asked us what did we see when we look into the mirror. It was a mixture of good and bad responses and then what seemed like a whole lifetime and two day it was finally my turn and I responded with a confident "Happy", i could feel the "she think you better than us " looks. Little did they know i wasn't even happy, I would just tell myself that so maybe one day it would be true. Then the mirror came to the hands of Jantrice and she said "progress".
The point of the lesson was to see God in us inside of us , because its not about you. We are supposed to be the moon and reflect the sun a.k.a God's light in us. This lesson really hit , because this was during a time I was going through this uneventful thing called Life. I was living in out families home , hotels , or friends houses, with my mother , and 2 sisters. I was embarrassed about my current situation and didn't want to tell anybody , but i needed someone to talk to about it. John 9:3 was the bible verse she read it talks about a man who was born blind and everyone thought he was blind due to sin , but in actuality he was blind so others can see how God works in his life. To show that miracles really do happen, Jesus spat in the dirt and rub it on the mans eyes now he can see and tell others the works of God.
Sometimes your hard times have nothing to do with you, but how you smile through the midst of the storm and show other that God is working. So in conclusion we eventually found a stable home and i was able to help one of my very close friends through a similar problem , which made me happy to see I wasn't alone and that I could help someone. Turn a horrible thing into an honor To let her know that there is truly a light at the end of a tunnel. Just keep the faith and release that "Its Not About You".
