What If I Told You... by Debi - June 2015 Scholarship Essay

What if I told you I actually enjoy hearing a professor assign me an essay? Now I believe many of students know that relief of being assessed by essay versus a final exam of multiple chose. Essays mean less pressure, and more opportunity to show case what you do know.

Now there are a lot of reasons students dread multiple-choice exams. It means an endless cycle of memorization and the questions are often shallow. It is difficult to create analytical and evaluative questions. When having to create fifty questions, it is likely that they lack any real context. These types of assessments are not practical. You are likely to never have to take another multiple-choice exam after college. However writing, being persuasive and being able to articulate with words what you mean is essential for your education, career and also your life.

Essays allow for the student to explain why something is true. Students should be able to articulate what they know and give a defense for their knowledge. Learning should be a creative endeavor. Multiple-Choice Tests hinders critical thinking. The amount of learning is limited to your answer either being right or wrong. Essays allow for students to do their research, it is not one-dimensional. The multiple dimensions of writing allows for students to take multiple steps in their learning. Giving students the opportunity to research, analysis and create, which allows for them to actually understand and learn. The matter of fact is that when you write an essay, you learn to express yourself in a more logical way, and also you develop your writing skills, your vocabulary and your own writing style. By writing essays you can grow to become a talented and creative writer or speaker. Writing develops you in many ways.
