Leadership and College Sports by DeAnte' - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership plays a major role in college. I have been playing sports all my life and it has played a big role in my life. It does teach you how to be a leader, be able to get along with others, and how to have good sportsmanship. Sports are fun, but it can also be used as a tool to help you with challenges in life. I have definitely embodied the characteristics, and have put them to use on my basketball team and in my community. On my basketball team at school, I am considered a captain/ leader of the team. I am a returning varsity player and am considered one of the veteran players on the team. As a leader, my job is not only to tell people what to do when they have done something wrong, but lead by example. If I’m not doing things right, it just would not be right for the younger guys on the team to follow my path, and would make me look like less of a leader. So I try to do everything I can the correct way, and encourage the team to do the same. Once everyone is on one accord, it allows us to move closer to our goal of becoming better basketball players, and a basketball team through team work, while developing sportsmanship at the same time.

I have the same characteristics when it comes to volunteering also. As a youth, I try to get involved in many activities that contribute to making society better. One particular activity I did was volunteer at the North Texas Food Bank and was excited while doing so. My experience volunteering at the North Texas Food Bank was inspiring, fun, and overall a great experience. When I came, I came in with an open mind and a mindset of helping the community. I knew that the work I was going to do was going to be extremely beneficial to the less-fortunate people. The experience was great. I was able to feed many people by boxing canned goods, making over four hundred meals and contributing to society by feeding the hungry people in the community. My experience showed me the importance of donating my time and made me realize how it made it better for the community and for others, which is why I continue to help others today. My leadership skills helped out in big way. Other younger people seen a young person like me volunteering, and realized how much fun I had, made them want to do the same. They realized that you could have fun and help the community out at the same time. Through my leadership, and our teamwork, we helped the community and made a change in people lives.
