The Key to College Success by DeAnna - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
While it is important to be able to act individually, it is also essential to be able to show the skills of a leader in college. Whether it be to lead your physics lab group through a difficult lab, or to lead your varsity team to victory, it will be necessary at one point or another for an individual to take charge and be a leader.
Without the skills of a leader it would be impossible to succeed in school academically. Even if someone is an outstanding student, a large part of college is being able to work with others in a group for labs and discussions. If a great student happens to be placed with an individual that doesn't understand the course quite as well as them, they will need to be able to work with that student and possibly teach them the material, which requires the skills of a leader. A student must also be able to manage a potentially rowdy or unproductive lab group in order to save their grade and their group members' grades.
In order to succeed in college extra-curriculars, such as sports or clubs, a student must be able to lead others. As the captain of the football team, for instance, it would be incredibly important to be able to gain control of fellow teammates and direct them towards a success. As for clubs, nothing would get done if nobody was capable of helping others stay on track. In order to set up the stage for theater, or to train your fellow chess team players, it is mandatory to be responsible and have control over a situation.
In conclusion, if an individual lacks leadership skills in college, they will most likely fail academically and they will not get full satisfaction out of their extra-curriculars.
