Non Traditional Learning by DeAira - September 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a single mom working a full-time job, finding non-traditional ways to learn has become essential in my pursuit of growth, both personally and professionally. Balancing work, family, and education means I need learning methods that are flexible, efficient, and tailored to my unique circumstances. My favorite non-traditional way to learn is through podcasts and audiobooks, as they allow me to absorb new knowledge while managing my busy life. I’ve found that audio learning gives me the freedom to continue my education during moments that would otherwise be idle, such as during my commute, while doing household chores, or even during my kids’ extracurricular activities. This method maximizes my time without sacrificing the quality of the learning experience.
Currently, I’m learning about health promotion and wellness, which ties directly into my passion for pursuing a career in radiologic technology. Health promotion is an area that fascinates me because it’s about preventing illness before it becomes critical and empowering people to take control of their health. As a mom, I care deeply about the health of my children and my community, and I want to set an example by not only prioritizing our own well-being but also contributing to the greater good.
I regularly listen to podcasts that focus on wellness, nutrition, and preventive care, which has helped me integrate healthier habits into our daily lives. For instance, I’ve learned the importance of balancing physical activity, stress management, and proper nutrition, all of which have become regular conversations with my kids. It’s been rewarding to apply what I learn to improve our routines, such as creating fun, nutritious meals together and encouraging active playtime instead of screen time. As I listen to experts in the field, I gain valuable insights that I can later use in my future career to help others make informed health choices.
In addition to health promotion, I am also learning strategies for managing time and stress. Being a single mom with a full-time job means that time management is crucial for maintaining a balance between my responsibilities and self-care. Audiobooks on time management and productivity have given me tools to stay organized and prioritize tasks effectively. One of the key things I’ve implemented is the concept of time-blocking, where I dedicate specific chunks of time to particular tasks, whether it’s helping my children with their homework, studying for my radiologic technology program, or unwinding at the end of the day. This approach has not only improved my efficiency but has also helped me carve out moments of rest, which are vital for both my mental and physical health.
Another area I am learning about outside of school is financial literacy. As a single mom, financial stability is incredibly important for me and my children’s future. I have been using podcasts and online courses to gain a better understanding of budgeting, saving, and investing. This non-traditional learning has empowered me to make more informed financial decisions, giving me greater confidence as I work toward long-term goals, such as providing for my children’s education and saving for emergencies. This knowledge will not only benefit me personally but also professionally, as understanding the financial side of healthcare will be essential in navigating the complexities of the field.
What I love most about non-traditional learning methods is that they offer the flexibility I need as a working mom. I can fit learning into the gaps of my day and cover a wide range of topics that are immediately applicable to my life. Learning doesn’t have to be confined to a classroom or a textbook; it can happen while I’m cooking dinner, driving to work, or even during my rare moments of quiet. It’s about making the most of the time I have and continuously feeding my curiosity.
In conclusion, my favorite non-traditional way to learn is through podcasts and audiobooks, as they offer the flexibility and convenience needed to fit into my busy life as a single mom with a full-time job. Currently, I’m learning about health promotion and wellness, time management, and financial literacy. These areas of focus not only help me in my personal life but also align with my career goals in radiologic technology, where I aim to contribute to health promotion efforts within my community. By embracing non-traditional learning, I’ve found ways to grow and improve, even with the demands of work and motherhood.
