Creating Pathways of Opportunities Beyond Boundaries by Dayanara - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
Growing up in Mexico, I witnessed directly the huge income disparities in the lives of those around me. Some had everything they needed, while others struggled just to get by. The disparities were clear, and this sparked in me a strong concern about the injustice of privilege and struggle. It appeared unfair that some people were born into privilege while others experienced constant struggle due to circumstances beyond their control. After I came to the United States, this interest in income disparities only grew because comparable trends persisted, trends in which these disparities can be caused by diverse reasons, including educational disparities, gender, resource access, and even networking advantages. This fueled my desire to explore the underlying reasons for inequality, prompting me to pursue a degree in sociology as a secondary major.
This passion for knowledge motivated me to obtain a degree in sociology. In the classroom, I learned about the complex interaction among factors that contribute to societal inequality, such as systematic racism and economic inequality. However, it was my work with non-profit organizations that made this knowledge a reality. They were more than just numbers on a spreadsheet; they were people whose goals and ambitions were obstructed by circumstances beyond their control. It was then that I realized I'd found my calling. Witnessing firsthand the struggles of disadvantaged individuals, I realized there was an urgent need for tangible solutions.
Motivated by the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams, my goal is to establish a non-profit organization that provides a nurturing environment for disadvantaged youth. A place where they can feel safe, supported, and empowered to pursue their passions and dreams. I believe that by providing guidance, resources, and opportunities, we can help people break free from a lack of mobility caused by limited access, opportunities, and familial support.
By establishing a center, they would not only have a roof over their heads but also advisors who believed in them, resources to help them achieve their goals, and a community that valued their uniqueness. A place where they may be free of societal pressures and build their paths forward. I am convinced that past decisions have a significant impact on future trajectories and that by providing a supportive environment, we may assist people in making constructive choices that will redirect their lives.
Throughout it all, I maintained my confidence that opportunities may be drivers for change. In a world full of disparities, I saw the possibility for profound change in the emergence of opportunities. It was this belief that motivated me to keep fighting for a future in which every person, regardless of background, had the opportunity to succeed, even in my career.
I'm reminded of the personal experiences that motivated me to pursue my chosen major. From the disparities I witnessed in my town to the transformative work I've had the opportunity to participate in, each experience has reinforced my dedication to making the world a more equitable place for everyone. Furthermore, using my sociology background, I hope to obtain a better grasp of how societal differences affect these youth. Recognizing the impact of societal norms and cultural contexts, I want to use existing resources and chances to promote their growth and success.
