My one main goal by Dawn - July 2015 Scholarship Essay

My name is Dawn Dolby. I am a 36 yr. old mother of two, currently working full time as a Certified Medical

Assistant. I am a student attending Watts School of Nursing, which is hospital based and partnered with the

University of Mount Olive. Upon completion, I will receive an associate’s degree in health science from the

University of Mount Olive, a diploma of nursing from Watts School of Nursing and will be a registered nurse.

Going back to college definitely comes with challenges, but I have successfully completed my prerequisite

courses, as well as my first semester of the nursing program.

My hardest challenge thus far, is being able to adapt to being back in school. I graduated from high school

in 1997, when the style of teaching and learning were different. I am in good academic standing, but I want to

be better. My goal is to be inducted into The Santa Filomena Honor Society. This student organization is

composed of upper classmen and members are hand-picked based on their high grade point average as well as their

ability to display leadership in school and nursing standards. Some of the challenges I face are being an

older,non-traditional student, working full-time while attending school full-time, and being a single mother.

Because of my work experience, I have partially met my goal. For me, being recognized academically,

demonstrates that I have overcome the challenges that I have faced after years of being out of school. It also

means that I worked hard for my degree, I conquered every obstacle, and that my determination paid off. Becoming

an honor student would be an accomplishment that would generate a sense of pride and self-confidence for me.

This is a goal I have yet to reach; however, I am determined to achieve it.

I believe that with commitment, I will accomplish my goal of being an academic scholar. It will no longer

be a dream, but a reality. Therefore, my dedication will help me accomplish my goal. I am grateful for the

opportunity from organizations like yours, who are able to provide financial assistance to students, who want to

further their education. My hopes are to become one of your scholarship recipients to help aid my college

education. I appreciate your time and consideration.
