The Unique Benefit of a College Degree by David - October 2024 Scholarship Essay

The biggest benefit I see in getting a college degree is the unique skills you gain during the experience. Last semester, I took a film-making class. I originally went to college for a screenwriting degree, so doing a film-making class was something I was interested in, even after I switched my major to communications. I learned a lot - besides the technical skills, I learned about project management. Whether that be finances or logistics. The class also helped me grow in my ability to give and take feedback in a positive manner.

And while the technical and professional skills I gained might never directly affect my future career, every skill I gain is important to who I am, both professionally and personally. It also affirmed my love for making video content.

All of this adds up to a well-rounded education outside of my major. A student who doesn’t go to college may never discover the same depth of experience. This experience often leads to innovation, as a student is empowered to think outside the box, finding solutions they never would have considered had they only learned topics specific to their major.

Another big benefit is for students still trying to figure out what they want to do. Having a variety of classes gives students experiences they never would have thought of before.

Outside of school, I love to read both fiction and non-fiction. I also write both creatively and professionally. I interact with people of all ages, from coaching 2nd and 3rd graders in Upward basketball to having job interviews with experienced professionals. I believe all of this will help me become a great communicator no matter what career I pursue.

I am thankful for the variety of unique experiences I’ve had in college. I also know that these experiences aren’t just about becoming well-rounded, but they also make college fun. As I continue to work towards my degree and improve my communication skills, I look forward to taking more unique classes and making sure I value each experience. Earning a college degree is a unique experience, and I believe it greatly benefits anyone who chooses to pursue it.
