Generative Artificial Intelligence And Education by David - September 2024 Scholarship Essay

Howdy! As a student living in through a transformational time for generative AI (GenAI), I have been fortunate to be a firsthand witness to how these new AI technologies are transforming our approach to learning. We are rapidly approaching a point in time where all students are able to have completely personalized educational experiences in ways that still have yet to be explored.

One useful way I have been utilizing AI models such as Claude 3.5 Sonnet and ChatGPT 4o include asking the models to summarize or explain topics at varying levels of complexity ("explain like I'm in elementary school, middle school, etc.). This allows me to break down topics from the collegiate level, down to bite-sized chunks of information that are significantly easier to digest, as well as rephrase concepts or ideas as needed if I do not get it the first time.

Another way I have been using GenAI for learning is by creating my own curriculums. When I want to dive into a new topic, I can use GenAI to help me understand what path I should take, given my current knowledge, to dive into a new subject. Models with enhanced memory are especially good at this since, when prompted, they are capable of quizzing you on any given topic and using that information to prepare a personalized curriculum. This has been especially helpful as I have been diving into the world of machine learning, deep learning, and starting my own coding projects using newer AI techniques.

One of my favorite ways to use GenAI has been to upload my textbook, lecture slides, or notes from class, and prompt the model to quiz me on the information. Depending on the prompt, I can make it quiz me with open ended questions, multiple choice, or fill in the blank questions. Using these techniques, I have been learning about machine learning significantly faster than I think I would be normally. I am extremely appreciate to be living in this time where I am now able to customize my learning experience quickly and I hope this information helps others do the same.
