My Tech-Driven Future by David - May 2023 Scholarship Essay
In the vast realm of possibilities in college, choosing a major is a critical decision. For some, it is an effortless decision guided by a deep-rooted passion. However, for others, like myself, the path is an intricate web of interests and possibilities that ultimately converge into a singular purpose - a major in Computer Science with a focus on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and the endless possibilities of the tech future. Although I am a firm believer that even after college, it is never too late to change your mind and find passion. Warren Buffett became very successful in his mid-50s, granted he had some investments to boost his growth.
My investments, however, exist as opportunities to understand the awe-inspiring world of technology. The relentless march of progress fascinated me with its promises of transforming society, businesses, and the very essence of human existence. I yearn to be a part of this transformation. Within the realm of CS, I discovered my love for cybersecurity. Studying online, taking an externship, and participating in the CyberPatriot competition for three years, let me hone in on my previous computer skills and develop a practical side to them.
Beyond academia, I immersed myself in extracurricular activities that further fueled my interests and provided invaluable hands-on experience. Late nights spent tinkering with lines of code and pushing my boundaries brought a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment like no other. I developed a keen eye for problem-solving, perseverance, and collaboration - skills vital in the fast-paced world of technology.
While it is easy to narrate my extracurricular involvements directly, I believe in the power of showing rather than telling. The code I crafted, the projects I brought to life, and the collaborations I engaged in, all serve as representations of my dedication and passion for the field. Even in our school’s GIS pathway, I was an integral part of the team as the technical lead, using my skills in programming and integrating microelectronics during projects.
As I look ahead, I am filled with a mixture of anticipation and gratitude. The decision to pursue CS is about contributing to something greater than myself, such as the commitment to creating a safer digital landscape. It is about being part of a movement that has the power to shape the world we live in. And with plenty of challenges overcome, breakthroughs achieved, and innovative solutions implemented, I will continue to be guided by the passion that led me to this path.
In the end, choosing a major is not just about the subject matter; it is about finding that perfect intersection of passion, purpose, and possibility.
