Can a night owl become an early bird? by David - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

When I was in middle school, I found multiple studies that showed that teenagers do better at their schoolwork when they started the school day at 10:00 A.M. I convinced my parents to try out the theory during most of my homeschool years. We always made sure I had a big breakfast, and I was ready to start the day. After we tried it for about a year, my parents saw that my grades improved more when I started schoolwork later, even though I usually worked late into the evening.
Recently, I started working at Starbucks, usually starting my shift between 7 or 8 A.M. No matter how early or late it is when I start my shift, I can always make a superb cup of coffee for my customers.
I wondered how I could go from being a night person to being so productive in the morning, then I realized that I have been making coffee all of my life. I could do it in my sleep. I came to the conclusion that while I could do things out of habit any time of day, I can only do something new - like schoolwork - as the day went on and I became more awake.
Though I may not be able to choose when I start my shift throughout the course of my future career, hopefully any real brain activity required on my part will not be early in the morning. Because coffee only goes so far, and so far it has never changed this night owl to an early bird.
