What Education Means to Me by David - April 2018 Scholarship Essay

What Education Means to Me
Education means different things to different people. To me, education is power for your brain. It opens doors in so many different areas of life. From reading and analyzing novels, knowing what happened in history, studying scientific theories and concepts, comprehending mathematical formulas and understanding logic and reasoning, or learning a new skill; education expands one’s mind, which provides the power to change one’s life for the better. Therefore, I choose the hashtag “#brainpower” to describe what education means to me.
First, the ability to communicate with others is powerful. With it, people can work with each other. They can persuade and influence others. They can organize people and solve problems together. Truly, these are skills each person needs regardless of the career they choose and knowing them certainly gives the brain power!
Second, with understanding and reasoning, one can think better and make better choices. Life is full of choices. Which food should I eat? Which candidate should I vote for? Should I buy this item or that item? Being able to determine which option is best requires someone to weigh the benefits and disadvantages, uncover any bias or deception, and calculate the costs. It would be impossible to make a good choice without the reasoning and understanding that a good education can give us. Surely, education is brainpower!
Third, having even a basic grasp of history and science helps one through life by providing information about things we all will encounter in life. Examples include how our bodies work and what is good for it, being able to test something in an intelligent/scientific way, and knowing what happened in the past so we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past. Each of these things can only be learned through a good education. Unequivocally, education is brainpower!
In conclusion, without education we are wasting our brain. It is a shame to waste such an important and powerful resource. Education should be something each of us cherish because it gives us so much #brainpower!
