Teaching Spanish by David - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
Teaching is not only a great profession but it is the opportunity to make an impact in the life of an individual. Teaching is the platform to share different experiences, inspire students, and encourage a younger generation to become just as successful as the prior. If I were to have the opportunity in doing this by teaching, I would teach a class of foreign language. Spanish would be the language I would teach as a college professor in order to inspire students, help my own, and work in teaching the language that I love.
Teaching is an important profession that is many times overlooked by students and other professions. Teaching is not only a job that requires discipline and integrity, but holds much pressure because of the responsibility that must be held. Professors have huge impacts in the lives of their students. This impact can either be a negative one or a positive one. Having the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a student inspiring them to take on new heights is an important responsibility that cannot be taken lightly. Teaching Spanish as a professor would be an amazing opportunity. It allows me to be able to talk in my most comfortable language while encouraging younger individuals to learn new things, either by learning a new language or reaching out for better opportunities. Teaching the language that I grew up learning places me in a situation in which I have a better chance of being more effective. I can be more effective in my goals of teaching the language and in my ultimate goal to inspire students to become better individuals of society.
To teach is to have a platform for the younger generation that is to come. Teaching Spanish would give me the opportunity to help the younger Spanish speaking generation. I can help native speakers as well as non-native speakers. To teach Spanish would help me connect with the young Spanish culture that will soon begin their development to becoming individuals in society. To have Spanish culture engraved in you is very special. As a Mexican American, it was a bit tough for me to adjust to different types of mindsets and perspectives. That slowly changed as I encountered more young people who were looking to be different and set a new standard in their families as I was. Teachers want to make a positive impact in the lives of their students. Teaching Spanish will give me that opportunity to help my own and all students who want to make something better for themselves.
I grew up in a Spanish speaking home. My family did not know the language of English therefore they spoke their first language. I grew up learning the beautiful language of Spanish as well as the beautiful language of English. Knowing both languages is an open door to many opportunities. Whatever the case may be, by teaching Spanish I will be working and teaching what I love. To have the ability to speak Spanish and having the opportunity to teach it would give me satisfaction knowing that in some way another I have given all that I can to ensure a good education to all of my students.
