The Passion of Lifelong Learning by Dave Jerson - September 2018 Scholarship Essay
No matter what age I am, I always strive to continuously grow as an individual. The only way to keep growing past physical limitations is through lifelong learning. Although learning can happen through the typical school/education system, I believe that learning can also occur outside the classroom.
By the age of 44, I planned to have gained two bachelor certificates, one in cognitive science and one in computer science. I also plan to be involved in Artificial Intelligence research with a top university. I believe discovering new ways of improving a non-living being’s thought process and learning how to improve a computer’s processing power is exciting. The research process would also involve working with others, consequently leading to constantly learning better ways of collaborating as a team in order to accomplish the task.
I see myself always striving to learn outside of my field and to seek how different an unrelated topic can be connected to the field of computer science. I believe that in order to keep learning we must always question everything, which includes everything which could lead to questioning things that have never been asked before.
In order to familiarize myself with questioning at the age of 44, I plan to learn from students. I plan to teach other students about computer science and how similar computer processing is to how humans think. I hope that as I teach these students, I am asked questions that challenge my way of thinking in order to retain and enhance my own thought process at the age of 44.
I also hope that through my own passion for lifelong learning, I can inspire others around me to have the desire of learning no matter their age.
Each and every morning we wake up, we're granted the opportunity to learn and improve ourselves.
