A World Where We Are "Truly" Prepared by Darian - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
In the 12 years that I have been in school it has been great learning how to do long division. I've truly enjoyed learning that inside my body the process of mitosis takes place all the time. Even when I was made to memorize the presidents, life was great. So the day that I graduate I'll certainly be prepared for the real world. When the electric bill comes and its $98.52 I'll scream,"George Washington was the first president." , that will certainly take care of that bill. When the car insurance comes i'll just do long division on the total price. Won't that make it smaller? Sadly, that's not how any of this works. When your name is called and you walk across that stage you are supposed to be ready to tackle the world head on. You are looked on as someone who has their whole future ahead of them. Someone who is behind the wheel of their own destiny. But, what happens if you get a flat tire. Do you know how to change it? Do you know what fluids do what in your car? Do you know what to do if you hit a deer?
These are some of the best examples for why I would teach "Home Ec". I want every kid to leave my class knowing how to not only pay their bills but what they can do to make those bills smaller. Not everyone can afford a $300.00 electric bill and honestly no one should have an electric bill that high. If there are simple tricks that can help someone who truly needs it than I think school is the perfect place to learn them. What about the boy who can't make anything except ramen. How will he get the proper nutrients in a world where he needs to buy the healthy ingredients to make the healthy food. No matter what you put in ramen, its still ramen. If this boy can learn how to use an oven, understand measurements and directions, and get some practice with simple dishes, at least he will have a place to start from. He will be able to try new things with the confidence needed to succeed.
This class would become a staple in the school. One of your required courses to graduate. With this course under your belt you will be prepared for all of the things that life has to throw at you. I can't remember the last time my mom told me that the only way she could get gas in her car was by naming all 50 states. I do, however, remember a time where the only way we could get gas in our car was if we paid for it. Sounds easy right? If you haven't learned the proper tricks and tips to budgeting than how can you be sure that when that little gauge hovers over the "E", that you will have enough to fill it. This is the way to truly prepare kids for the future.
