A Voice For Students by Darby - July 2018 Scholarship Essay

I don't think a single school in America is perfect. Something can always be improved. As student body president I would have the unique ability to demand certain problems to be fixed; and, as any high schooler knows, there are lots of problems in a school. So, if I was nominated to be the student body president, I would like to address the problems each student has with the school and find positive solutions for them.
As a student, I feel as though teachers are never listening to me. My suggestions to make the building safer or better are shoved away, seeing as more important things need to be addressed. That kind of thinking can discourage a student from asking for the changes they want or need. Because of this, my first job as student body president would be to leave a suggestion drop box would be left just outside of the office. Then, every Friday, I would open the suggestion box and go through them. I would find the issues that seem most requested, the ones that seem to put other students in the most danger, or ones that I personally feel would benefit the school as well. I would sort them over the weekend and find the top three recommendations that I would bring to the schools principal.
After looking through all of the suggestions, I would then schedule a meeting with the school principal. I would discuss the issues that I think need to be addressed, and the ones addressed to me by students. We then would discuss how these issues could be changed and set up a plan to best address each issue. I would then follow through with the detailed plan to start implementing these new and improved changed into my school.
I believe the best way to positively influence your school is to listen to the students. They are the ones who spend the most time at the school. It feels like their second home because if they're anything like me, they spend more time at school then at home. Giving the students the ability to address what they want to be changed in their school (anonymously as well) could show teachers problems they would never have noticed. Giving everyone a voice leads to a positive environment for a high school.
