Going Outside by Danyel - July 2017 Scholarship Essay
Playing on the swings, chasing the ice cream truck, or even arguing with your sister about who did what all are fond memories we wish we could relive. Not having a care in the world, where the biggest problem in our lives was figuring out what to play next, is the best part in anyone’s life. As I had been transitioning to being a teenager and now an adult starting college, I, like my parents, my brother and sister, realized I finished being a kid. Never again will I have the blissful ignorance we are all jealous of. I can understand how it’s a part of life, and eventually I hope to have kids of my own and I will make sure they have fun the old-fashioned way. Growing up with phones, or tablets could never be a possibility with my parents and that’s how it’s going to be with my kids and that’s how it should be with everyone’s kids.
Going outside is always a healthy idea but is sadly losing popularity so If I had the chance to, my Ted Talk would be to encourage people to take their kids outside to play. In a child’s development, going outside has been proven many times to be mentally and physically healthy so why shouldn’t we encourage our children to go outside and play? It’s sad really, many of us don’t encourage kids stop staring into their screens. Too often do I see parks barren of children as far as the eye can see. Instead we see kids with phones or tablets in their hands where sticks and park swings should be.
